Credit Repair in the News

Credit repair is more important than ever. In a recent interview with MarketWatch, a Wall Street Journal website, the Consumer Operations manager for the MyFICO division of Fair Isaac spoke out about the importance of checking your credit reports. In the words of the article, “There may be some surprises waiting for you.”

A New Credit Repair Landscape

Creditors everywhere have tightened their guidelines. This new credit environment has made credit repair more important than ever before. And to make things even more difficult in these already challenging times, creditors have begun to reduce and close credit cards in order to limit their own risk exposure.

The Limit Reduction Problem

This action is doubly hard for consumers. First, these limit reductions are happening unexpectedly, even to those who have never made a late payment. And second, and even more damaging, is the snowball effect that follows. A major part of your credit score is based on the relationship between your current balance and your credit limit. When a creditor cuts your limit your balance-to-limit ratio increases and your credit score will fall, through no fault of your own.

The Snowball Effect

And the snowball starts rolling. Once the first creditor drops a limit and your scores fall, other creditors are likely to drop your limits as well. And the lower your scores the more prone you will be to this perfect storm of credit repair trouble. What to do?

Good Credit Repair Advice

The Consumer Operations Manager for MyFICO suggests that you do everything in your power to insure that your credit report is as clean as possible and your scores are optimized. And don’t make the mistake of thinking that paying your bills on time (as important as it is) is you need to do. Credit repair knowledge is power. Here is a summary of his credit repair tips, and our extrapolation.

Check Your Credit Reports

Look for changes in your account limits. And while you’re at it, check for errors. Errors come in many shapes. Derogatory information should cease reporting, generally, after seven years. You should know that the seven year reporting period clock starts on the date of the original default with the original creditor. The original default was the first reported late payment in the sequence that led to the charge off or collection status. Collectors cannot reset the clock with subsequent reporting. And while we are on the subject of collectors, you should know that if a collector no longer owns the debt, he is supposed to remove the account entirely from your credit report. When in doubt, challenge the item with the credit bureaus or hire a credit repair professional to manage the process for you.

Don’t Get Close to Your Credit Card Limits

A significant percentage of your credit score is based on your balance-to-limit ratio. Reduce your balances as much as possible. Less than 20% of your limit is the optimal balance. Many people are blindsided by precipitous drops in the scores when they max out a card, even when they have never been late on a payment.

Keep Accounts Active

Use your cards to keep them alive. Dormant cards are in danger of being closed by creditors and unless you have plenty of open accounts this could cause a drop in your scores and send you in search of credit repair solutions.

Pay Your Bills on Time

This seems like a no-brainer, but it is so important. Make sure you understand the impact your purchases will have on your budget. Try not to let yourself get spread too thin. A single late payment can have a big effect on your scores, and may even trigger adverse action, such as limit reduction, by your creditors.

Don’t Apply for New Credit Cards

We have warned against store cards for years, and MyFICO agrees. Store cards can be credit repair suicide as they often present a triple threat. First, you will have an inquiry. Second, you will have a new account which will weigh down your credit scores for several months. And last, and worst, is the fact that most store cards offer a credit limit only marginally over the amount of your purchase. Put these together and you get credit repair trouble.

Call for Credit Repair Help

If you are confused by all of the components of credit report and score management, or don’t have the time to handle the task on your own, don’t give up. Call a credit repair professional for help. A credit repair professional will manage the process for you and insure that everything possible is done to optimize your credit. Good luck!

Credit Repair Works

Credit repair works. And the results will have a dramatic impact on your financial life. Lenders everywhere have tightened their credit requirements. Every single point on your credit score matters. Credit blemishes can quickly translate into higher interest rates and even loan denials. You cannot afford to ignore the potential of credit repair. Do it yourself, or for a small investment you can hire a professional credit repair service to manage the process for you. Either way, now is the time to take action.

The Great Liberation

Free yourself from the illusion of authority. Many people make the mistake of giving too much credibility to the content of their credit reports. The power of the credit bureaus can be intimidating; we might believe our eyes against our better judgment. The credit bureaus play an important role in our world, but they are not without flaw. Over half of all credit reports include errors that are significant enough for the victims to pay premium interest rates, and, in many cases, to face loan denial. The credit bureaus maintain files on over 200 million Americans. That means that over 100 million Americans are victims of credit reporting errors.

The Credit Repair Plot Thickens

There is an unfortunate and unjust credit reporting anomaly that is virtually guaranteed to handicap those who can afford it the least. If you have had legitimate credit problems in the past you are more than twice as likely to be a victim of reporting errors as someone who has not had issues. There are two primary reasons for this; when you default on a debt the creditor is apt to move your account into another reporting category increasing the likelihood of duplicates and errors, and secondly, if an account is sent to a collector the lax reporting conformity of the collection industry can harm your credit needlessly for years to come.

And There is More

An informed examination of your credit report by a credit repair professional may turn up errors in many categories. Some of these errors are pure compliance violations that you are not likely to spot without training. If you are going to manage your own credit repair project make sure to do your homework before getting started. Educate yourself about reporting period limits for all categories of credit, make sure you understand the operation of statute of limitations, and peruse the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The little details can make the difference between success and failure.

The Credit Repair Solution

Understanding your rights and the compliance requirements of the credit bureaus will give you the legal leverage you need for your credit repair effort to succeed. Your credit bureau disputes are the cornerstone of your credit repair project, but there is more. True credit repair success should be measured by the improvement in your FICO credit scores. You must carry out your credit bureau disputes with an understanding of the impact every change in your credit report will have on your FICO scores. When you put it all together you will be thrilled with the results.

Help is Near

You are not alone. Many people don’t have the time to manage their credit repair project as carefully as necessary. If you feel that you can’t give it the attention it deserves, hire a credit repair professional. A professional will insure that every issue is identified, and will address your problems in an informed and careful manner designed to produce the best results. In addition, truly effective credit repair services will assist you in rebuilding and reshaping your credit to meet future lenders guidelines so that you will be left with genuinely useable credit. Whichever route you take, I urge you to act now. It’s your credit, and it matters.

Credit Repair is a very debated topic on the net right now as to whether it’s legal, effective, ethical and an avenue worth pursuing for individuals with negative, inaccurate or unverifiable information on their credit reports. No matter where you search, you will find varying opinions in regard the legitimacy of the credit repair industry, from the FTC and Attorney General, to debt consolidation companies and law firms practicing credit repair companies.

First off to answer the question “is credit repair and its practitioners legal,” the answer is yes! There is a specific body of legislation, the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) that outlines how credit repair companies may legally operate. This Federal regulation is proof that the industry as a whole is legal and not a scam. I think the negative overtones are more likely a case of a few hundred bad apples taking advantage of people.

The second most debated topic in many of the popular credit forums is whether or not one should even use a credit repair company, or give it a go themselves? The art of credit repair or credit restoration is not necessarily a difficult one to grasp and despite what a lot of the credit repair companies and lawyers would like you to believe, there is no “magical, proprietary dispute letter.” Remember, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) was set up so that consumers could fix errors on their credit reports on their own. It was not set up so consumers could fix errors If they had the magic letter. It really is almost as simple as saying…

“Hey this is not my account, please verify the information and remove from my report”

So why would you consider hiring a company to improve your credit score if it is so easy? The art of credit repair is not perfectly written letter, but more of knowing the little tricks credit bureaus and collection agents use to avoid eliminating the debt.

As much bad press credit repair agencies have received, bureaus and collection agencies are no angels either. They try and trick you, they don’t always follow procedure and we’ve seen numerous cases of them breaking promises consumers have made with them when negotiating debt.

Credit report repair agencies should be well versed and know what to expect and exactly how to negotiate through all the little tricks that the average consumer wouldn’t. If you are lucky enough to be working with an ethical company that does its job and at a good price, it can work wonders for your credit score.

The people we spoke with that do favor using an agency to fix their credit, do so because typically it’s only 30.00 to 50.00 per month and they just don’t feel like dealing with the headaches, nor do they want to be their own guinea pigs.

If you do make the decision you would rather leave it to the pros, what steps should you take to make sure you’re hiring the right company? At the time of writing this there is very little governing the industry outside of CROA and it is a craps shoot for the most part.

However, there is hope on the horizon. Currently a non-profit organization is being formed called the National Credit Repair Association (NCRA) This industry organization brings overdue legitimacy and integrity to the credit repair field, and represents all certified credit repair organizations. The idea is that accredited credit repair firms are overseen to ensure they embody top standards and ethics, and adhere to all applicable state and federal laws in their practices. In other words, the “BBB” of the Credit Repair Industry.

We highly recommend that you utilize this service when fully launched as it will force legitimate companies to sign up much like they would the BBB and it will also weed out the unscrupulous credit repair companies who do not wish to adhere to standards. The credit repair industry is a legal and much needed industry, but much like any “new fad” it’s going to take time to get regulated, weed out the scum and let the professionals rise to the top.

In closing, credit repair is something that most Americans will probably have to deal with at some point in their lives. It can be done by you with a little homework, accurate record keeping and patience, or you can hire a firm just as long as you’ve done your homework, insist the company is a member of The NCRA and make sure they are not breaking laws when dealing with your personal credit scores.

When you get your own credit card, you create a credit report that becomes the basis for future financial transactions to banks, institutions and other credit cards. Everyone has a credit report.

Your credit report contains information about your liquidity and credit standing. It shows how prompt you are in paying monthly dues, if you have the ability to pay your credit card bills and if you are deep in debt or not.

However, sometimes we can experience a financial crisis and our credit standing may be damaged. In comes a credit repair system. You see a lot of businesses offering a “guaranteed” credit repair but be warned. Some of these are misleading. They may say it’s credit repair but it could mean bankruptcy.

Filing for bankruptcy is indeed one way to resolve credit repair. But the impact on your credit standing could be hard. Any person who files for bankruptcy will need to wait ten years before clearing his bad record with financial institutions. During this time, your applications for loans, getting a job or new credit cards could be denied.

There are credit repair systems that advertise consolidation of your accounts. In essence, that could mean using the law and filing for bankruptcy. Other credit repair systems will guarantee that you will not lose your property or do not even have to borrow from other to fix your credit. Watch out for these kinds of credit repair systems. They are only out to get money from you, since they do ask for a processing fee, and put you into more trouble with bankruptcy.

If you find yourself needing credit repair, try to fix it yourself first. There are ways to handle a financial crisis like this. One is to talk to your creditors. They may be willing to settle for a compromise through an easier monthly payment scheme.

Two, you can ask for credit repair counseling service. There are institutions that provide those in need of credit repair advice with options on how to earn more money, how to budget and use a debt repayment plan. They often act as middlemen with the creditors, you pay them and they will pay the creditors.

Lastly, you can take out a loan to resolve your credit repair. However, this means that you have to take your house, car, yacht or whatever huge asset you have as collateral. The pressure for credit repair will be passed on to the property but at least you will have a better credit standing which can help you acquire more loans in the future.

Most credit repair systems fail because they only consider the fastest and easiest way to avoid harassment from creditors, foreclosures and repossessions. As the person needing credit repair, you have to realize that fastest may not always mean the best option. The credit repair alternatives mentioned above can help you avoid being going to court for estafa.

If all else fails, filing for bankruptcy is the only credit repair solution left. But do this as a last resort. The effects on your financial standing to the outside word will greatly suffer.

Credit repair can be a hard on anyone. So as much as possible, remember to keep your expenses in check. Try not to take more of what you need. Pay your monthly credit card bills, even if it is only the minimum amount. These simple gestures can insure you won’t have to go through a credit repair scenario in your days.

Ask 10 people to define credit repair and you will probably get 10 different answers. Even amongst financial experts, there are disagreements about what credit repair is.

So exactly what is credit repair?

People on the far end of the spectrum will tell you that credit repair is a myth. That it is snake oil peddled by con-artists trying to separate you from your money. They feel that a bad credit rating is something you have earned and will have to endure without recourse. According to them, the only way you can “repair” your credit is to wait for the negative items on your credit reports to naturally fall off.

Fortunately for people with bad credit, there is much more to the credit repair story than these naysayers want to believe. But this is not to say their advice is completely invalid. If your credit score is suffering, your credit will improve as the late payments, collections accounts, or liens naturally drop off your reports. Providing that new negative items are not added to your credit reports, time is absolutely an ally of the credit repair process.

Sitting and waiting, however, is not credit repair. There is much more you can do.

Those who have done their research on the credit reporting system and your rights as a consumer can tell you that repairing your credit can be a much more proactive activity than credit repair critics would have you believe. There are a number of things you can do right now to try removing the negative information in your credit reports.

Based on your rights under a variety of consumer protection statutes including the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have the right to dispute any items in your credit reports that you feel are inaccurate. And exactly what does inaccurate mean in this case? When dealing with your credit reports, inaccurate credit listings can include any items you feel are patently wrong as well as items that you feel are misleading, biased, incomplete, or unverifiable. As you can see, you have significant leeway when it comes to determining which items you believe should be listed on your credit reports.

The process of removing bad credit from your credit reports is a more accurate definition of credit repair, however, there is still more to be done. When most people think about repairing their credit, they think of increasing their credit score. In most cases, deleting bad credit will get you closer to this goal, but it might not get you all the way. Improving your credit score may be more than just getting rid of the bad, you may also need to add some of the good.

A more complete definition of credit repair includes not only the removal of bad credit, but the addition of good credit and the changes in lifestyle that will help you maintain your credit and continue working towards an 800 credit score.

Finally, the first step in achieving your credit goals may not have anything to do with the items currently on your credit reports. If you are falling behind in payments or facing bankruptcy, removing negative items from your credit reports is at best a temporary fix. You will need to take control of your finances through better budgeting, debt consolidation, or maybe with the help of professional counseling. It is only after you have stopped adding bad credit to your credit reports that you will be able to start improving them.

Because of this, you could extend the definition of credit repair to a much broader concept that also includes debt management. Credit repair could be thought of as a holistic effort that ultimately leads you to high credit worthiness and financial stability.

Too Many Errors

Credit repair serves a real purpose. Credit reporting errors are much more prevalent and costly than most people realize. Over half of all credit reports have errors on them that are serious enough to cause the victim to pay higher interest rates and even to be denied for financing. Credit repair is about finding and correcting these errors, and there is more to it than most people realize.

Too Hard to Find

Many people dismiss credit repair as a process that requires no more than a cursory scan of their credit reports. Unfortunately, a quick scan of your credit reports will almost certainly leave almost all of the score-damaging errors undiscovered. To tap the real potential of credit repair requires an exploration of the credit reporting guidelines embodied by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). An understanding of the FCRA is certain to reveal a number of surprising and correctable errors. And every error caught and corrected is money in the bank.

Why Credit Repair Matters

You might be shocked at the potential cost of impaired credit. You pay interest on the money you borrow, and your interest rates are based on your credit. And it adds up. If you have a mortgage, an auto loan, and a couple of credit cards a damaged credit report could be costing you thousands of dollars each year. A small investment of time today can repay you in a tangible way for many years to come.

Sneaky Defensive Credit Bureaus

If you are going to launch a credit repair project you must adopt a somewhat skeptical attitude towards the credit bureaus. It might be handy to understand that the credit bureaus are not government agencies, nor do they have any status other than for-profit businesses. They each manage billions of pieces of data for over 200 million Americans, and they are not perfect. They are interested in maintaining accuracy, but only to the extent that it is not an economic detriment. You should also keep in mind that they often take a stand against credit repair only because it is in their best financial interest to do so.

The Problem with the FTC

The FTC in very justified in their campaign against crooked credit repair operations. The only real caveat here is that the FTC operations and press campaigns against scams can be heavy handed and unhappily omit the fact that, as in every industry, there are good guys and bad guys, and there are many excellent credit repair companies capable of significantly transforming your life.

How the Bureaus Manage Disputes

Once you decide to get your credit repair project underway you need to be conscious of the fact that you need to work thoughtfully, and even respectfully, within the credit bureau system. It is essential to understand the FCRA and to focus your disputes in areas that you have leverage, but it is equally important to understand that you will face some resistance. The credit bureaus receive mountains of disputes every day and have the right to refuse to process any request they feel is frivolous. They use this right liberally, and you need to be patient; determined, but patient.

Collectors and Credit Repair

Another somewhat recalcitrant group of participants in the credit reporting process is collectors. They are governed by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), and in their interaction with the bureaus by the FCRA, but there are so few repercussions for failure to comply that an amazing number of errors, intentional and otherwise, slip through the cracks. And the unwary consumer pays the price.

Winning the Credit Repair Battle with Collectors

When it comes to collectors appearing on your credit report, doubt your eyes. Take the time to understand how reporting period limits work, and how collectors reset them causing collections to report many years past their legal reporting limit. And to defend yourself against any active collectors you will also need to understand how statutes of limitation work. When it comes to credit repair a little homework really pays.

Professional Credit Repair Services Work

Not everyone has the time available to master the details involved in credit repair success. Nothing can affect your financial life like your credit. You simply cannot afford to do half the job. It’s your credit, and you owe it to yourself to make sure the job is done right. Either invest in a couple of good books and put in some serious study time, or hire someone to do the job for you. Credit repair is all about the details. It’s not hard to get the results if you do it right. Good luck!

Starting Your Credit Repair Project

Credit Repair is not hard. Take the time to plan your effort and the results will be fantastic. Here is a list of our favorite credit repair tips. Try them together, or pick the ones that look good to you. Good luck, you are on your way!

Reduce Your Balances

The balances on your credit cards can cause a swing of 150 points. If you are utilizing over 60 percent of the limit on a card you are losing points; if you approach the limit your credit scores will plummet. If you really want to boost your scores reduce your balances to below 20 percent of the limit; i.e. if you have a $1,000 limit get the balance under $200 and watch your scores take off.

Increase Your Card Limits

There are two sides to the balance-to-limit ratio. If you don’t have the wherewithal to get your balances under 20 percent of the limit, try to have the limit increased; the result will be the same. The credit markets are pretty tight these days, but it’s worth a phone call to the credit card company. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Open Secured Cards to Rebuild Credit

Secured credit cards are one of the best credit repair tools available. If your credit is poor and you cannot get approved for a regular credit card, apply for a secured card. Keep the balance-to-limit ratio in mind and maintain your balances under 20 percent of the limit for the best credit repair results. This is especially important with new cards which are weighed extra heavily by the credit scoring model.

Get a Couple of Authorized User Accounts

For a quick credit repair boost call a family member and have them add you to one of their credit cards as an authorized user. Fair Isaac Corp recently modified their software to block the benefit of brokered authorized user accounts, so don’t bother trying to purchase these accounts online, but legitimate family member authorized user accounts will continue to provide a major credit repair benefit.

Rehabilitate Student Loans

If you are in default of a student loan now is the time to make it right. There is no cause for fear, student loan lenders are required to provide affordable payment options to accommodate your needs. Before you call your lender call the Student Loan Ombudsman Office at (877) 557-2575, they are on your side and will explain your rights. Rehabilitation can even purge the old default status from your account; a nice credit repair bonus.

Validate Collection Letters

If you get a collection letter in the mail don’t throw it away; you will be wasting a great credit repair opportunity. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act you have only 30 days to force the collector to validate the debt. If they cannot provide proof they have the legal right to collect along with an objective accounting from the original creditor they must cease all collection efforts and not report to the credit bureaus.

Give Yourself the Benefit of the Doubt

When it comes to credit repair give yourself the benefit of the doubt. Examine your credit reports carefully, but don’t assume the derogatory information is accurate just because it is being reported. If there is a shadow of a doubt dispute it. Many independent studies have verified that credit reports are likely to contain multiple errors. Put your credit repair rights to work and clean up your reports.

Challenge Collections

Among the worst credit report offenders are collectors. Collectors regularly buy and sell collection accounts. Collectors who no longer own a debt are supposed to withdraw the account from your credit report entirely. Unfortunately, there is no incentive for them to comply with the law, so they almost always let the expired accounts linger. Dispute expired collections and they will be removed from your report.

Underreported Limits

Examine your reports for underreported credit card limits. Recall that your credit score is affected by your balance-to-limit ratios. It is not uncommon for credit cards companies to report your limit as less than it is, or even as equal to your current balance. Just make a copy of a recent credit card statement and attach it to your dispute letter for quick credit repair results.

Call a Credit Repair Professional

If you are too busy to manage the credit repair task yourself, call a professional. A credit repair professional will examine your credit reports and insure that every possible strategy is utilized to correct errors and improve your scores. Either way, it’s your credit; make sure it is as good as it can be.

Copyright © 2008 James W. Kemish. All Content. All Rights Reserved.

Nowadays, more people are in dire straits with their credit. They end up juggling bills by robbing Peter to pay Paul. That is not a good way to pay your bills. It does nothing but create frustration and stress. Consumers that are in trouble with their credit may want to use the services of a credit repair services company. These companies work in the field of credit repair to help consumers correct their credit report and eventually increase their credit score.

Due to people being out of work, they are not able to pay their bills on time, if at all. There are more people that are seeking credit repair assistance because they want to keep the decent credit that they have left. Companies that offer credit repair services can help them to turn things around. Consumers can get some type of reprieve when they use companies such as these.

There are other reasons why consumers fall behind on their debt and can’t pay like they are supposed to. Some consumers overspend and don’t have the money to pay for it later. They want to be like others that purchase nice things. However, they don’t think about the consequences until they are close to broke. They try to fix it themselves, but it can become unbearable for them. So they search for an effective solution to their credit repair problems. This is why companies that specialize in credit repair services can be like a godsend.

Sometimes finding a company that specializes in credit repair services can be like a needle in a haystack. You should never jump at the first one you come across that claims to be able to help you with credit repair. You must conduct your due diligence and check them out. Avoiding this step can cause you to face more financial ruin than what you’re already experiencing. You must also find out how much it will cost for the service.

You will be able to benefit from a company that provides credit repair services. Companies that specialize in this are knowledgeable about credit repair. They will work to get your credit back in shape. They can intervene on your behalf when your efforts have stalled. Creditors will be more willing to negotiate with them and help to set up reasonable monthly payments. The company can also speak with creditors to get them to reduce your debt and make settlement arrangements.

You can use one of two types of credit repair services. There is one that will charge you a fee for their services. The other one receives money from creditors in exchange for a charged off debt. The latter companies that are involved in credit repair are better equipped to assist you.

It is important that when you are looking for a credit repair service that you find someone that has your best interest at heart. Credit repair is serious business, and you want to make sure that you have the right person to get your credit in order. Otherwise, you may be out of more money than you think.

Credit repair seems like a very tedious process but actually it is not. Credit repair is a booming business now and, unfortunately, a lot of unscrupulous elements are thriving in the market. By law, credit repair organizations must give you a copy of the “Consumer Credit File Rights Under State and Federal Law” before you sign a contract. If you decide to respond to a credit repair offer, look for these tell-tale signs of a scam: companies that want you to pay for credit repair services before they provide any services.

Under the Credit Repair Organizations Act, credit repair companies cannot require you to pay until they have completed the services they have promised. For example, a credit repair company cannot: make false claims about their services, charge you until they have completed the promised services, perform any services until they have your signature on a written contract, and have completed a three-day waiting period. Everything a credit repair clinic can do for you legally, you can do for yourself at little or no cost.

Credit

Credit debt can greatly negatively impact your overall credit status. Credit card companies never let on about how to avoid getting into debt. Creditors set their own credit-granting standards and not all of them look at your credit history the same way. Creditors don’t have to report to all three credit bureaus, so they typically report to the credit bureau to which they also subscribe. Credit bureaus generate your report on information they receive from your creditors; they don’t verify it.

Only time, a conscious effort, and a personal debt repayment plan will improve your credit report. Everyday, companies nationwide appeal to consumers with poor credit histories. They promise, for a fee, to clean up your credit report so you can get a car loan, a home mortgage, insurance, or even a job. After you pay them hundreds or thousands of dollars in fees, these companies do nothing to improve your credit report; most simply vanish with your money. You could be charged and prosecuted for mail or wire fraud if you use the mail or telephone to apply for credit and provide false information. It’s a federal crime to lie on a loan or credit application, to misrepresent your Social Security number, and to obtain an Employer Identification Number from the Internal Revenue Service under false pretenses.

Bad

Bad Credit will cost you thousands of dollars. You can have bad credit erased legally and quickly. Bad credit repair can improve your way of life greatly enabling you to get the mortgage or refinance loan at the best possible low rate. A bad credit report simply means that you have a bit of work ahead after disputing items to the Bureaus Equifax, Experian and Transunion.

Proper management with Bad credit repair software will save tremendous time and energy, rapidly boost fico ratings and boost fico scores. You can certainly fix and improve bad credit on your own, but it helps to have a vast knowledge of the law. You can clean up your reports so that bad debts and bad scores are not an issue. You must take the first steps to clean up bad debts from your credit reports and this must be done with Equifax credit bureau, Trans Union credit bureau and Experian credit bureau.

Information

Under the FCRA, both the consumer reporting company and the information provider (that is, the person, company, or organization that provides information about you to a consumer reporting company) are responsible for correcting inaccurate or incomplete information in your report. To take advantage of all your rights under this law, contact the consumer reporting company and the information provider. Tell the consumer reporting company, in writing, what information you think is inaccurate.

In addition to providing your complete name and address, your letter should clearly identify each item in your report you dispute, state the facts and explain why you dispute the information, and request that it be removed or corrected. They also must forward all the relevant data you provide about the inaccuracy to the organization that provided the information. After the information provider receives notice of a dispute from the consumer reporting company, it must investigate, review the relevant information, and report the results back to the consumer reporting company.

If the information provider finds the disputed information is inaccurate, it must notify all three nationwide consumer reporting companies so they can correct the information in your file. If an item is changed or deleted, the consumer reporting company cannot put the disputed information back in your file unless the information provider verifies that it is accurate and complete. The consumer reportincompany also must send you written notice that includes the name, address, and phone number of the information provider.

Tell the creditor or other information provider, in writing, that you dispute an item. And if you are correct – that is, if the information is found to be inaccurate – the information provider may not report it again. Even if you don’t have a poor credit history, some financial advisors and consumer advocates suggest you review your credit report periodically because the information it contains affects whether you can get a loan or insurance – and how much you will have to pay for it. Do make sure the information is accurate, complete, and up-to-date before you apply for a loan for a major purchase like a house or car, buy insurance, or apply for a job.

Identity thieves may use your information to open a new credit card account in your name. That’s when someone uses your personal information – like your name, your Social Security number, or your credit card number – to commit fraud.

Everything a credit repair clinic can do for you legally, you can do for yourself at little or no cost. Many states have laws regulating credit repair companies. If you’ve had a problem with a credit repair company, don’t be embarrassed to report it. But truly effective credit repair requires an in-depth understanding of the scoring model as well. Bad credit repair can improve your way of life greatly enabling you to get the mortgage or refinance loan at the best possible low rate. And the best thing with credit repair services is that most of these services come free.

Credit Repair and Credit Scores

Credit repair is on everyone’s mind these days. And credit scores are for sale everywhere. There is only one problem. None of these advertised credit scores are the same as the credit scores that lenders use when making credit decisions. Whoa. That’s right. People spend huge amounts of money to buy credit scores which they mistakenly believe are relevant to their life. What the heck is the story? You want to know? Okay. I’ll tell you!

Lenders Use FICO Scores

Lenders use a type of credit score called the FICO score. FICO stands for Fair Isaac Corporation, the creator of this important score. The credit bureaus gather consumer credit data and run their data through the FICO credit score software to produce the scores that lenders use to make decisions.

Avoid Knockoff Scores

If you are starting a credit repair project or plan to get a loan in the near future and want to know where you stand you should purchase your FICO scores. But if you buy your scores from one of the credit bureaus websites you will get the bureaus own proprietary scores. And you will be no wiser than you were before because these knockoff scores can easily be 100 points different from your FICO scores; deceptive for your loan information, and useless for benchmarking your credit repair.

It’s About Money Honey

Alas, the credit bureaus realized they could make more money by creating their own version of a credit score and selling it to the public. If they sold genuine FICO scores to consumers they would have to pay fees to Fair Isaac. Lenders demand FICO scores; it’s a simple fact, they would never settle for less. Consumers on the other hand seem to be clueless. But there is a reason that consumers are clueless, the credit bureaus don’t offer any transparency, just a sales pitch.

Credit Repair and the Right Stuff

It’s all about your FICO scores. If you are going to benchmark your credit repair effort or plan to get a loan these are the only scores that matter. And you can get them online at the website for Fair Isaac Corporation, MyFico.com. The cost is about $50 for all three scores. Now are your ready to hear how these important scores work? Here is a mixture of the information published by Fair Isaac and some practical credit repair tips from yours truly, and I do know a bit about this, so listen up.

Major Credit Repair Weight

Fair Isaac is happy to tell you that the major part of your credit score is based on two categories. These are your payment history, weighing in at a hefty 35% of your score, and your account balances, tipping the scale at 30% of your total score. This is a bare bones fact, and much useful credit repair info is left unsaid, so I guess I’ll say it. If you care about your credit scores you need to focus on your revolving balances.

Revolving Account Bombs

Revolving balances are the lynchpin of your credit scores, and hence your credit repair effort. You can have a decade of perfect credit under your belt. You may have paid off a dozen cars and made every payment on time, but if you run up your credit card balances to the max and then check your credit scores you are in for a rude awakening. Maxed out credit cards will devastate your scores. Do you want some numbers? Okay. A maxed out card can erase 100 points from your score. An over-limit card can knock 150 points off; it’s a credit repair disaster. But wait, there is more.

Credit Repair Leverage

I don’t want you to feel like this is all bad news. Revolving debt is conversely the most powerful credit repair tool you have at your disposal for pumping up your scores. FICO recognizes 5 different balance tiers: 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 percent usage. If you are getting a loan in the near future and have the resources to pay your balances under 20% of the limit your scores will be shining.

The Rest of the Story

The other ingredients relevant to your credit repair task include the age of your accounts, coming in at 15% of your score, new credit and inquiries at 10%, and the type, or mix of credit at the final 10%. These remaining ingredients are minor and for most people will take care of themselves as life goes on. I should, however, add that it is valuable credit repair advice to avoid opening new accounts before applying for a major loan, and to keep those inquiries to a minimum.
