Change Your Life

The words echo though the canyons of the Internet, “there is no credit repair quick fix”. This could not be farther from the truth. If you make the mistake of believing this you will have done yourself grave financial harm. Credit repair can, in fact, clean up the errors on your credit report and dramatically improve your credit scores in a very short amount of time. And in the current credit market environment this can mean a life changing difference in the interest rate you will get on a mortgage, or a car loan, and even in your ability to obtain financing when you need it. So how does it work?

The Mystery of Credit Repair

There was a time when a timely payment history meant that you had great credit. Would you be aghast to discover that this is no longer true? In fact, it is so far from the truth that it is quite possible to make every payment on time for years on end and still have a dismal credit score. And herein lays the mystery of credit repair. The days of common sense credit are all in the past. Credit score optimization now requires a virtual roadmap. How did this come about?

The End of Common Sense Credit

The era of common sense credit begin its demise in the mid 1950s, when two then unknown researchers at Stanford University first conceived of a predictive model of credit behavior. Their concept was that it would be possible for prospective lenders to make lending decisions based only on a numeric representation of the credit worthiness of a loan applicant. The two researchers were engineer Bill Fair and mathematician Earl Isaac. The company they founded to develop their visionary algorithm was Fair Isaac Corp. and the world changing number they invented is called the FICO score.

It’s a Predictive Model

The FICO score is commonly perceived by consumers as a report card score, a grade reflecting the quality of their financial responsibility. This is not quite correct. The FICO score is designed to predict, specifically, the future credit behavior of a consumer. And future credit behavior is not at all the same as a predictable continuum of past payment history. There is so much more involved; and it is in these details that a credit repair professional is able to guide you through the maze of obstacles to the goal of credit score optimization.

My FICO.com

If you visit the excellent Fair Isaac website you will find a wealth of credit repair guidance coupled with some worthwhile explanations of the mechanics of the FICO credit score formula. I recommend a thorough reading of the website for anyone considering starting a credit repair effort. You will find that the scoring model puts different weight on five discrete categories of data; 35 percent of your score is based on payment history, 30 percent on amounts owed, 15 percent on length of credit history, 10 percent on new credit, and 10 percent on the types of credit used. This is somewhat helpful, but there is much unsaid. Here are a couple of highlights that may assist your credit repair project.

Managing Your Credit Repair

If you are starting a credit repair effort you should vow to avoid late payments at all costs. But there is so much more involved. Your credit score is influenced by both the negative and positive information on your credit report. It is clear that you should clean up the erroneous derogatory information, but as importantly, you must feed positive information to the credit bureaus each month. It is essential that you have at least two open revolving accounts. But be careful, because if you get the wrong type of revolving accounts, or manage them improperly (and I don’t mean making late payments), your credit scores can plummet.

Good Credit Bad Credit

There is good revolving credit and there is bad revolving credit. Your credit repair success depends on understanding this. All consumer credit, such as store cards and furniture store loans are bad. You cannot optimize your credit scores with this type of debt. You need mainstream credit cards; MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover are winners. If you can’t get approved for regular unsecured credit cards, get secured cards. They are easy to get and they make for great credit repair tools, if you manage them right! Here’s how.

Watch Your Balance!

We noted above that FICO puts 30 percent weight on amounts owed. They also put 15 percent weight on age of accounts. What they don’t tell you is that the amount owned on new accounts carries almost double the weight of an older seasoned account. This makes for both a great credit repair opportunity and a potential credit repair land mine. If you max out a new card you can lose up to 150 points on your score, but keep that balance down, ideally under 20 percent of the available credit line, and watch your scores take off. Good luck with your credit repair!

Copyright © 2008 Ian Webber. All Content. All Rights Reserved.

Credit Repair and Your Bright Future

Credit repair can change your life. As daunting as it may seem at the outset, it does not have to be a frightful process accompanied by fear and angst. You can make your credit repair project fun. If you are just starting your credit repair effort congratulations are in order. You are taking the first step towards a hopeful and brighter future. What could be more positive? You have every reason to be happy. I know that the events which led to your current credit problems are still represented on your credit report, but in embarking on the credit repair path you have determined to face them head on. Trust me when I say that once you have decided on this course of action you will find positive and constructive ways of managing these issues.

Credit Repair and Your Financial Life

Your credit repair success depends on the stability of your financial life. If you don’t have a budget yet, now is the time! And don’t worry. Make a game of it. Budgeting is an exploration of the facts of your financial life. This is definitely a case where knowledge is power. The more you know about your own finances, the more control you will be able to exercise; your credit repair progress will be insured. Here are some great budget tips. Clean off your desk or kitchen table and get a clean pad of paper and a pen. Write down every single thing that you spend money on, from the basics to the luxuries. If you take an annual vacation, write it down. If you go out to dinner once a week write it down.

Make Your Life Affordable

Once you have completed your list convert your expenses into a monthly number; expenses like your annual vacation can be divided by twelve. This final number represents your current monthly obligation. Annual expenses may only come up one time a year, but if you cannot save for it on a monthly basis you are heading for financial stress. Buying on credit has its place, but in the long run it is not sustainable. Eventually you will reach a tipping point and you will risk a credit repair setback. Your budget should be based on real current affordability.

Balancing Your Budget

So, what if you reach the end of your calculation and you realize that you cannot afford your monthly expenses? Now is the time for action. You must protect your credit repair efforts. Organize your life, eliminate the unnecessary expenses, and cut back on expenses if necessary. Does this sound austere? Keep in mind that living within your means will result in all of the benefits you want from credit repair, like inner peace, an absence of financial stress, great credit, and even the ability to start saving for the future. And when it comes to great credit, remember that as your credit repair project matures you will be able to refinance your car, mortgage, etc. at lower rates; this in turn will ease your budget constraints, and put a big smile on your face!

Managing Collectors on Your Terms

Have the events of the past left you with outstanding collections? Here are some great credit repair tips for managing this situation that will put you in control; and there is nothing better than getting control over a situation that once felt threatening. A collector is not allowed to report a collection on your credit report unless they have mailed you a collection notice. When you receive a collection notice you have a very special legal right called debt validation. Your may use this credit repair tool for only 30 days from the day you receive the collection letter. Within this period of time you may demand of the collector proof that they have the legal right to collect as well as an accurate accounting of the amount they say you owe. If they cannot provide the documentation you request they must cease all collection efforts.

Using Your Credit Repair Rights

From this point forward do not pay a collector just because they ask you. Would you give money to a stranger that knocks on your door? Collectors buy and sell debt so often that if you fail to do this you genuinely risk the possibility that you will give money to someone that does not have the right to collect. If this happens it is almost inevitable that another collector will surface at some point in the future demanding payment for the very same debt. Take advantage of your legal rights and demand proof.

Call in the Troops

Not having fun yet? Need credit repair help? Call in the troops. There is no reason that you can’t get the results you need without suffering. If you feel overwhelmed by the task, call a credit repair professional. They should be able to bring a little joy back into your life by quickly making sense out of your situation and helping you set out on the path to great credit repair success! Enjoy the journey!

Copyright © 2008 Ian Webber. All Content. All Rights Reserved.

Credit repair is one of those topics that most people are not familiar with and many of those that think they are, do not have a correct understanding of what credit repair really is. To help provide an introduction to the concept, provided below are answers to three common questions people have about credit repair.

Is Credit Repair Legal?

Absolutely! All a creditor has to do is report a negative item to a credit bureau for it to be added on your credit reports. They do not have to prove that you did anything wrong and the credit bureaus are not going to contact you to get your side of the story.

By disputing the items in your credit reports, you are asking the credit bureaus to perform an investigation to determine if the negative items on your credit reports are being reported correctly. If they are not, then they must be revised or removed.

In a perfect world, credit repair would not be necessary, but because of the obvious flaws in the credit reporting system, the Fair Credit Reporting Act was enacted to protect your rights against unfair credit reporting. Because of this act, you have the right to dispute any items in your credit reports that you feel are not completely accurate.

How Do Inaccurate Items End Up On My Credit Reports?

There are a number of reasons why inaccurate items could end up on your credit reports. For example, a simple human error such as typing in your Social Security number instead of someone else’s could result in their bad credit showing up on your credit reports. Also, mistyped dollar amounts, items reported more than once, incorrect dates, and other errors could results in errors on your credit reports.

Another common reason for credit errors is mistaken identity. It is very common for your credit reports to show negative items from someone else with your same name. This could happen if you have a fairly common name or in some cases, in the case of a son who is named after their father. It has happened many times that someone gets denied for credit only to find out that a bankruptcy or some other serious negative item has been erroneously added to their credit reports because someone else with the same name was not responsible with their finances.

Finally, identity theft is a major source of credit reporting errors. Someone steals your personal information and destroys your credit all in your name.

Can I Save Money and Repair My Credit Myself?

Yes, you have every right to repair your credit yourself. As is mentioned in numerous credit repair articles, anything a credit repair company can do, you can do yourself.

Of course, this is true of almost any service. Just as you have the right to repair your own credit, you also have the right to change your own oil, cut your own hair, or even represent yourself in a court of law. But as is also the case of these services, many people find that is is easier, cheaper, and more effective to hire a professional.

When considering whether or not to repair your credit yourself, also consider what your time is worth. Depending on the severity of your credit problems and the cooperation level of your creditors, effectively repairing your credit reports could involve learning about and analyzing your credit reports, researching the Fair Credit Reporting Act, research the Fair Credit Billing Act, researching the Fair Debt Collection Practices act, writing and sending dispute letters to the credit bureaus, writing and sending dispute letters to your individual creditors, and properly responding to all of these entities.

Many people find that it is simply easier to get help with credit repair than to do it themselves. In fact, a sizable percentage of people who end up using a credit repair company to help them with their credit reports do so after already trying to repair their credit themselves.

Credit Repair, Is it a Scam?

Many people will argue and tell you that all credit repair is a scam, but if you know your facts then you can see that honest, legitimate companies can assist you in doing credit repair.

Credit repair is not a way to change falsely change information on your credit report. No one can promise you a great credit score because Credit Repair does not work that way. Can you improve your credit score by doing credit repair? Generally, most people find that their credit score does improve with proper credit repair. So let’s start off by explaining what credit repair is and how you should go about it.

Everyone has a credit history report. This report is built upon information that is sent to the credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). The information is then added to your credit history and works to build your credit score.

Most Americans have credit history reports that have inaccurate or misleading information on their reports. Approximately, 79% of all credit history reports have information that is inaccurate. Inaccurate information causes your credit score to be incorrect. Credit Repair is when you dispute the inaccurate information so that your credit report is as accurate as possible. When correcting the information that is inaccurate your credit score will change. Since you are disputing information that is being reported to your credit report that is negative, you will see changes in your credit score in a positive manner. This change in a positive manner will raise your credit score.

Information on your credit report should be reviewed very closely. Dates, balances, payment history can play a huge part in determining what effect that is having on your credit report. For example, if you opened an account in 2000 but it shows on your credit report that you opened that account in 2002, then your credit score will be lower because your score is based on credit history. The longer you have had an account, the more it helps your credit score. If you have an account that shows your balance as $1000 but it actually is $2000 then your available credit ratio is wrong and that will lower your credit score. This is why it is so important to review your credit history report very carefully.

If you have reviewed your credit report and found that you have inaccurate information on your report, then you have the right to dispute that information. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) gives you that right. You can review the FCRA at www.ftc.gov website. This will help you to understand your rights. You should know that no one can remove information from your credit report that is accurate. Any company that guarantees they can is not a legitimate credit repair company.

You have the right to dispute any information without the assistance of anyone. You can take the time to review your report, go over what information is on that report and then determine if it is accurate or not. If you have never reviewed a credit report before then you might be in for a headache as they are extremely difficult to read and determine if the information is accurate or not.

Most legitimate credit repair companies will break down the information on the report and show you what is negative on your report. The best place to start is to review the negative information and determine what is inaccurate. This is where you should begin to dispute the inaccurate information. Again, you can do all of this yourself but it is very time consuming. Now once you have found the inaccurate information on your credit report and begun the dispute process, be prepared for resistance. Most companies don’t want to go back and take the time to review the information closely. This causes them to just verify the account. You might get a letter back from the credit bureau telling you that they verified the account. But you know that the information they verified is still wrong. Most people will stop disputing here and that is why there is still so much information being reported that is still wrong. Sometimes, you have to dispute information on your credit report several times before the company sees that you won’t stop disputing inaccurate information. Then the companies will take a good hard look and generally find the errors. Once they have found the errors, they will correct them.

Don’t dispute too many items at one time. Think of it this way, if someone walked up to you and gave you a pile of things that you were told to fix, you may be overwhelmed and not sure what to do next. Credit Bureaus will “flag” an account that gets too many disputes at one time and may not go forward with any dispute. It is best to dispute a few things at a time so that you don’t “flag” your account. Working at a slow steady pace generally will give you much better results than if you try to get everything cleaned up all at once.

If you dispute an item on Experian, it is best to dispute a different item to the other bureaus. This might help your process of Credit Repair to move more quickly. When a dispute goes to a company for review, if they find an error, they will report it to all three bureaus. So if you dispute one item at all three bureaus and the company reports the changes to all three bureaus, you did not work the system efficiently.

So remember this:

1. Take the time to review your credit report closely

2. Determine which items on your credit report are inaccurate.

3. Dispute the information that is inaccurate.

4. Don’t be discouraged if the bureau reports the information as verified.

5. Don’t dispute too many items at one time. Large disputes will trigger flags at the bureaus.

6. Dispute different things at different bureaus. This might speed up the process.

7. Determine if the problem is small and manageable. Get assistance if necessary.

A legitimate Credit Repair Company can help you by doing all of the day to day work. It could save you a lot in postage if you have huge amounts of disputes to handle. Ovation Credit Services can show you how they process your credit information and how you inform them as to what needs to be disputed. Then your responsibility is to update and simply monitor what disputes are being processed for you. To get the best credit score possible, you will need to start with the most accurate report possible. Then by paying your bills in full and on time, your credit score will get better each and every month.

Credit Repair and Our Poor Judgment

Credit repair becomes necessary in three instances. First, and maybe foremost, is the case of simple ignorance; we get in over our heads out of pure stupidity. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been there, and it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. We get a credit card, see something we want and we buy it. Or we decide to purchase a new car, knowing perfectly well what we can afford, and drive away from the dealer in our deluxe new ride, complete with a whopper of a monthly payment. About a month later the payments begin and we realize we are going to have to juggle our budget to make ends meet. This is the beginning of the spiral that wreaks havoc on our credit report and creates the need for credit repair.

Credit Repair and Risk Gone Wrong

The second case that can create the need for credit repair is the case of risk gone wrong. Entrepreneurs are my heroes; nothing ventured nothing gained; from Apple to Microsoft, America was built on the inspiration of those who tried something new. But for every great effort that survives and thrives, many more struggle and fade away, often ruining the credit history of the inspired entrepreneur. These failures may have nothing whatsoever to do with poor judgment on the part of the business person. After all, the best paid plans often meet unforeseen circumstances. There are so many moving parts involved in running a business that even the most experienced veterans may be taken by surprise. Bring on the credit repair.

Environmental Issues and Other Causes

The third case in which credit repair becomes a necessity is when our environment takes us by surprise. Recession strikes, home values fall; we lose our jobs; take pay cuts, or worse. There are many cases where we dodge the worst of the bullets only to find our budgets squeezed by gas prices forcing us into a borderline financial situation. And so the need for credit repair arises even for those who plan, budget, and think ahead. The road of life takes many turns and we can’t always anticipate what things will look like when we get around the next corner. But when our credit has taken a hit, credit repair can help us patch things up again.

Open Your Mind to the Possibility

Credit repair offers a solution to many of the credit issues that can arise in difficult times. But it must be properly understood. Credit repair is not about removing legitimate derogatory information from our credit reports. Credit repair is about making sure that every conceivable remedy for the issues that challenge your credit scores and financial wellbeing is considered. If you have credit problems you owe it to yourself to open your mind to the possibilities. Time can be your friend or your enemy. If you give up and do nothing to meet the challenges time is not your friend. But if you consult a credit repair professional and explore all of your credit repair options you will be on your feet again before you know it.

Credit Repair and Your Life

There are very real issues with the credit reporting system that that create the necessity for credit repair. You may be aware of the derogatory information on your credit report that reflects an unfortunate event in your life, but did you know that that derogatory data is likely to spawn a cascade of erroneous reporting issues that will magnify and exaggerate your credit troubles. These reporting issues must be identified and addressed. And given the importance of credit in your life, the presence of legitimate credit trouble makes it all the more important to examine every single opportunity to improve your credit scores. You work hard for every dollar you earn. Take the time to insure that your credit is an asset in your life. Explore the possibilities of credit repair.

Copyright © 2008 James W.

The Need for Credit Repair

In 2003 congress passed an important amendment to the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The amendment, known as FACTA, required Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to provide consumers with a free credit report, upon request, once every 12 months. This was meant to encourage consumers to examine their credit reports for errors. FACTA put a significant burden on the credit bureaus, and for good reason; 50% of all credit reports contain errors severe enough to cause consumers to pay premium interest rates on loans or even to be denied outright. This is a serious problem.

Getting Your Credit Reports

The website set up for the purpose of dispensing free credit reports to consumers is annualcreditreport.com, and is actually a hub that requires you to maneuver through three different sites. At each step you will face security questions which can bring your efforts to a standstill. It’s not easy, but it’s free! If you don’t have the patience I suggest you visit any of the bureau websites and purchase a tri-merged report. It will include all the information you need and should cost about fifteen dollars; easy as pie. Just make sure you don’t accidently signup for monthly monitoring or any of the many add-on services they peddle – unless you want to!

Should You Get Your Credit Scores?

In the long run credit repair is about credit scores. If you know your scores at the outset of your credit repair effort you will have a benchmark to monitor your progress. And so goes the logic, but it is easier said than done. The credit scores sold by the credit bureaus are not the same scores used by lenders when underwriting loan requests. Lenders use a score model known as FICO (an acronym for Fair Isaac & Company, the developer of the score). The credit bureaus sell FICO scores to lenders, but not to consumers. The scores sold on the bureau websites are “estimated scores” and can differ by up to 100 points from your FICO scores. Ouch. If you want to monitor your FICO scores you can purchase them at myfico.com. It will cost you about $50 for all three. You can decide if it’s worth it.

Organizing Your Credit Repair Effort is No Joke

If you are going to manage your own credit repair effort you want to get organized, really organized. Each credit bureau maintains unique information about you. The errors you find on one bureau may not be on the other two. In addition, the same account will often report with a different name and account number on each bureau. If you want to maximize the probability of success you must address each error individually with the offending bureau. I suggest you get three file folders to organize your efforts and plan on treating each credit bureau dispute effort as a separate project.

A Complete Examination

Once you are organized it’s time to get to work. Remember to deal with each bureau individually. If you got your credit reports for free you already have three separate reports. If you purchased a tri-merged report at one of the bureau sites you need to make copies so you have one for each of your three file folders. Start at the top of the first report and don’t skip a line even if you don’t spot an obvious problem. Truly effective credit repair is not just about finding the obvious derogatory issues (although they count too). There are lots of tricky little things to look for. Every point on your credit score matters. Let’s put in the effort!

The Credit Repair Hunt is On

Think of your credit repair effort as a treasure hunt. I bet you can find some credit repair gold, if you look carefully. Here are some of the little items that can add up to serious points on your credit score: underreported high credit limits on your revolving accounts, misreported start dates, balances on closed accounts, and duplicate accounts. Want more? If you have authorized user accounts with derogatory information or excessive balances they are hurting your score; make a call and get removed from the account. Oh, and a note on collections. If a collector no longer owns the debt they are not allowed to report the collection. Collectors sell accounts frequently, but the system does not provide any incentive for them to cease reporting. It’s up to you.

Consider a Credit Repair Professional

Your credit score will determine the cost of your mortgage, your auto loan, your credit cards, and more. Your credit score can even affect your employment and the cost of your property insurance. If you don’t have the time to take care of your own credit repair efforts, hire a pro! A credit repair professional will make sure that everything possible is done to clean up your reports and optimize your credit scores. Time is money, and if you already have a full schedule, don’t put off the task. Find a reputable credit repair service and put them to work for you!

Copyright © 2007 James W. Kemish.
