Well, first let’s start with what credit repair is. “Credit repair” is a term most commonly used to describe a systematic process of improving ones credit scores by obtaining copies of the individual’s credit report, reviewing the credit report for errors and misleading information; then disputing the information with the credit bureaus.

Well, first let’s start with what credit repair is. “Credit repair” is a term most commonly used to describe a systematic process of improving ones credit scores by obtaining copies of the individual’s credit report, reviewing the credit report for errors and misleading information; then disputing the information with the credit bureaus. This is just a basic explanation of the process. While it can be very simple for some, it is much more complex and time consuming for others.

Most consumers with bad credit are searching for free credit repair. Regrettably, there are no services that I know of that will repair your credit for free so, if you are looking for “free credit repair” you will have to do it by yourself. There are also some reputable, inexpensive credit repair services available for consumers who just don’t have time to learn the credit repair process. But, doing it yourself has many advantages and I think that most people who learn about the credit game have better chances of not getting into credit trouble again.

When you are ready to start your free credit repair journey, I suggest starting at a credit repair forum or by reading a credit repair book. A credit repair forum is a discussion group of people teaching and learning credit repair. There’s tons of information online – just be careful – there is lots of misinformation online as well. Remember to always research your questions with different sources.

After spending hours and hours researching credit repair online, I’ve realized that credit repair has got to be one of the most misconstrued topics online. There are way too many people being mislead online. They don’t research the information they find and end up repeating it to others. And yes, some of them are even repeating the information on their websites. They are only trying to help, but instead usually end up really hurting other people financially. Please, please do not be one of those people.

This is why I suggest credit repair forums; usually when someone is wrong, there are plenty of professionals at the forums that will correct that person immediately.

Maxing Out Credit Cards

For the record, there is nothing wrong with using credit cards. But if you are attempting credit repair you must understand the relationship between your card balances and your scores. Max out your cards if you must, but pay them down if you need your credit scores to be at their best the next 60 days. A maxed out credit card can cost you over 100 points on your credit score.

Opening Store Cards

Opening a store card may mean getting a discount, and saving money is a good thing. But store cards carry a triple credit repair threat. First comes the inquiry, next is the hit you get from opening a new account, and last is the high likelihood that the credit limit will be set very near the amount of your purchase. Together these three add up to major credit repair trouble.

Excessive Pre-Mortgage Activity

If you are getting ready to get a mortgage you better stop all non-essential credit activity. Too many people make the error of purchasing furniture, appliances, decorating items, and more, on credit, in advance of closing on their home. All of this credit activity can set your credit repair effort back and kill your credit scores at the very moment you need them the most.

Closing Old Accounts

When it comes to your credit score, old accounts are good accounts. As a credit repair rule of thumb, if you wish to optimize your credit scores, you can aim for having five open credit cards, including MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover. If you have accumulated more than five you may close them without worry, but otherwise don’t close your accounts or you will hurt your credit repair effort.

Counting on Refunds to Make Payments

If you pay for an item with a credit card and then return it, the store will credit your card. This does not mean that you don’t have to make your scheduled credit card payment. Don’t count on refunds or amounts in dispute to offset a scheduled payment or you will almost certainly end up with a late payment on your credit report and more unwanted credit repair problems.

Making Consumer Statements on Your Reports

If you dispute an item on your credit report you will be offered the opportunity to make a statement of up to 100 words. Don’t do it. I’m sorry to report that no lender will consider your story. Your comments are of no credit repair value and will only serve to draw attention to the issue and may even linger long after the derogatory item has fallen off. If you have made a statement you may write to the credit bureau to have it removed.

Waiting to Rebuild Credit

No matter how bad your credit may be it is important to start the rebuilding process right away. Many people decide to wait until their credit repair efforts have succeeded. Credit rebuilding is not the second phase of credit repair, it should be done concurrently. If you can’t get approved for regular credit cards, rebuild your credit with secured cards.

Trusting the Credit Bureaus

Don’t believe your eyes. Three quarters of all credit reports have errors. Just because a derogatory item is on your report does not means that it is correct. Errors may be generated by creditors, or by deficiencies in the credit reporting software itself. Because of the loose standards used by the credit bureaus for matching data millions of people have information on their reports that belong to other people.

Ignoring Collection Letters

If you get a letter from a collector don’t ignore it. You have thirty days under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act to demand the collector document their legal right to collect. This is an important credit repair tool. You also have the right to ask for an objective accounting of the amount they say you owe. If the collector cannot provide the documentation requested they must cease their collection efforts.

Doing it Alone

You don’t have to manage your credit repair on your own. If you are too busy to make the effort that credit repair requires just contact a reputable credit repair service. They will insure that everything possible is being done to clean up your credit reports and maximize your scores. Good luck!

Credit Repair Done Right

If you want your credit repair effort to succeed you need the right credit scores and credit reports. The wrong approach can put you on the path to lower credit scores and frustration. The information you are about to read may shock and amaze you. But if you do it right you will have a great advantage and avoid some serious frustration.

The Scores You Need

Do you know what your credit scores are? Are you sure? If you are going to begin a credit repair effort and want to benchmark your starting point you should do it right. Here’s the problem. The credit scores sold by the credit bureaus are not the same scores lenders use. Huh? That’s right; the credit bureaus created their own credit scores to cash in on the market opportunity. If you muddle through the fine print at the credit bureau websites you will discover the disclaimer.

Avoid Those Imitation Scores

This unfortunate fact applies to the army of credit resellers on the web as well. There is another problem with bureau scores. You may think that even an imitation score will serve your credit repair purposes, believing that your progress should be reflected in some way. I’m sorry to say that these scores do not behave the same as your real lender scores and are almost sure to result in disappointment.

MyFICO, the Right Score for Credit Repair

If you want your real scores you have to go to MyFICO.com the website of Fair Isaac Corp, the creator of the FICO score. The current cost of scores is about $50 for all three combined. A bit pricy, but it’s the only game in town. And for those intrepid credit repair warriors that want more detail, Equifax does in fact sell a FICO score. Unfortunately, they only make it available for your Equifax report, and you definitely want all three scores for your credit repair effort. Also, they use an older release of the formula, so the results will vary.

But Nix on their Credit Reports

So, head on over to MyFICO and get your scores right from the source. It’s the right credit repair choice. But there is another twist. Although MyFICO is the only way to get your scores, the credit reports they provide are the pits. For some strange reason MyFICO blocks out virtually all of the account numbers and offers only about half of the information that your credit repair effort will need. So get your wallet out again because you will have to buy your reports elsewhere. It takes few bucks to get your credit repair underway, but it’s worth doing it right.

The Right Reports

Although the credit bureaus peddle poor credit score products, they offer excellent tri-merged reports, full of all of the detail you need for your credit repair project, and when it comes to credit repair every detail matters. I’ve taken you down a twisty road so far, and I’m sorry to say that there is one more twist on this journey before we arrive at our goal.

Credit Repair and the Right Deal

Here is the final twist. The credit bureaus want to sign you up for monthly membership, hence the offers of free credit reports in exchange for joining this or that service. If you are not careful your free credit report will end up costing you hundreds of dollars. If you want to join a monthly service, that’s another story. There are benefits. But if you just want to get your credit repair underway and want a good cheap tri-merged report you have to look very carefully.

Hiding in Plain Sight

TrueCredit.com offers the best cheap one shot tri-merged report on the web. But it’s not easy to find, so don’t just run off to TrueCredit and think you’re going to find it clearly advertised. In fact, it’s about the last thing that they want you to buy. But it’s there, hiding in plain sight. Well, almost. Scroll down the home page. Look under the main picture for small print in light gray that says that coverage is not available for residents of New York.

Credit Repair Treasure Hunt Success

Right under that line you will find another line that says that you can also get your 3-bureau credit report without the free score. Click on the words, without the free score. It’s a credit repair treasure hunt. How hard can they make it? Wow. Make sure to uncheck the two boxes where they try to sell you two other ridiculous items that have no use for your life, not to mention your credit repair efforts. Now you have the tools you need to get started. Good luck!

Copyright © 2008 Ian Webber. All Content. All Rights Reserved.

Are You a Candidate for Credit Repair?

It is true that millions of people have benefited from credit repair. But there are many misconceptions about the subject that have led others to jump into credit repair programs before they were ready. If you are truly a candidate you are likely to see dramatic results in a short period of time. Your credit report can be tidied up and your credit scores optimized; many people see a complete transformation on their report and a significant jump in their scores within just a few months.

You Are Not a Candidate, if…

You are not a candidate for credit repair if you are having trouble paying your bills. Credit repair is not about eliminating debt or finding a way to erase legitimate obligations from your reports. There is little point in starting the process of cleaning up your credit if there will be new derogatory information reported each month. If you are in a financial bind there are several other options that you should investigate, including consumer credit counseling, debt negotiation, and bankruptcy. Prior to deciding on a course of action please take your time to research these options carefully.

You Are a Candidate, if…

You are a candidate for credit repair if your finances are reasonable stable. You must be able to keep up with your bills, and ideally have a little money left over for savings. The ability to contribute, even a small amount, to a saving account will allow you to create a safety cushion for unexpected expenses and to insure that you can preserve the fruits of your credit repair efforts. True progress may also require that you build new credit, and for many people this means opening secured credit cards. A secured card typically requires a small savings deposit ranging from 200 to 300 dollars, so you should have some money available to contribute to the cause.

Getting Started

If you are a candidate for credit repair there are several steps you must take to prepare for the process. This small investment of time at the outset will pay huge dividends. Too many people jump in blindly and consequently get frustrated, or more commonly get only half of the potential benefit. There are few things as important as your credit; you owe it to yourself to make sure the job gets done properly. When it comes to credit repair, short cuts are dead-ends. Here are some ideas about building the right foundation for your efforts.

Get Your Credit Reports

Start by getting all three of your credit reports. Credit reports are a little tricky to read. If you purchase your three bureau credit reports individually, or opt for the free reports offered through the government mandated site AnnualCreditReport.com you will be starting your project at a disadvantage. Give yourself the edge and invest in a good tri-merged credit report online. One of these reports should cost you less than 20 dollars and is well worth the money. Most tri-merged reports structure your credit information for ease of understanding and will allow you to make sense of everything you see.

Proofreading for Credit Repair

The goal of proofreading your credit reports is to indentify every single issue that is hurting your scores. Before starting there are two things you need to know. First, it is essential that you give yourself the benefit of the doubt; if there is any question in your mind about the accuracy of a derogatory item you should dispute it with the credit bureaus. Second, don’t skip anything regardless of how small. You might be surprised how little things can add up and impact your credit scores. It’s your credit. Everything matters.

Spotting Invisible Dangers

When you proofread your credit reports there are several special things to look out for. These issues are hard-to-spot legal and reporting problems that can depress your scores, and yet unless you are alert they will escape your notice. Underreported credit limits can make your cards look like they are over utilized, accounts often continue to report as open with a balance long after they have been paid and closed, duplicate listings are commonplace and should be eliminated, collectors are supposed to withdraw their listings completely when they sell the debt to another collector or return it to the original creditor, but they do not often comply. All of these issues can hurt your scores so look sharp!

Reach Out for Help

If at any time you feel overwhelmed by the task you should reach out for help. There are many professional credit repair services that can insure that the job gets done properly. These companies are typically very affordable and will make sure that nothing gets left out. The best of these credit repair firms will also provide additional services like score consulting, rehabilitation and rebuilding guidance, and more. It’s your credit. It matters. Good luck!

Copyright © 2009 Ian Webber. All Content. All Rights Reserved.

Using Your Credit Cards

There is nothing wrong with using your credit cards. Credit cards allow you to manage both purchases and unforeseen events over time. There is also nothing particularly wrong with running your balances up to the limit – unless you need your credit scores to be at their best in the short term.

Credit Repair and Your Credit Card Balances

The FICO scoring model recognizes five different credit card usage levels and adjusts your scores accordingly. These levels are 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 percent; the lower your balance the higher your score. This should not be taken lightly. Changing your credit card balances can cause a swing of over 100 points on your credit score. If you are applying for a loan every point on your score counts, so keep those balances down.

Store Cards Can be Good Business

Everyone likes a good deal. So when a cashier at a department store offers a discount in exchange for opening a new store card, it can be tempting. Sometimes accepting the offer is the right thing to do. It can be good business to save a little money. But in the world of credit repair, timing is everything. When that store card hits your credit report it will put a big dent in your credit score.

The Problem with Store Cards

Store cards contain three credit score hits in one little package. First is the inquiry, second is the new account, and third, almost inevitably, your new balance will be close to the card’s limit. If you don’t need your credit score anytime soon there is no problem, but if you will are applying for a loan, or are in a credit repair program, think twice before opening that new store card.

How Many Credit Cards

Too many credit cards are not great, so a bit of financial simplification may be in order, but don’t get carried away. Many people start a credit repair program and decide to tidy up their life by closing all but one credit card. This can send your credit score into a tailspin. If you have more than five open cards, go ahead and trim down, but otherwise leave them open. Your credit scores will thank you.

Rebuild Your Credit Now

After a period of financial difficulty many people find themselves with no open accounts. You need to have open accounts to build your credit scores. Credit repair takes time. Don’t wait until you have cleaned up the old derogatory information on your credit reports before applying for your new credit cards; start building now.

Secured Credit Cards for Credit Repair Success

If you can’t get approved for regular credit cards, get secured cards. Secured cards require a small saving account which will secure your new credit line. Open two secured accounts, keep the balance under twenty percent of your limit and you will see big credit repair results before you know it.

Authorized User Accounts – The Good News

Authorized user accounts provide two benefits. First, they are easy to get; anyone can add you to their account as an authorized user. Second, you inherit the benefit of the primary card holder’s payment history on that account. So, assuming they have a good history, your credit score will increase accordingly. A great credit repair trick – or is it?

Authorized user Accounts – The Bad News

The problem with authorized user accounts is that Fair Isaac and Company has removed the credit score inheritance benefit from the new version of the FICO software. The credit bureaus will be adopting the new software over the next year or so and the score benefit will be gone. It’s time to build real credit. If you cannot get unsecured credit cards, apply for secured cards. Take action today.

Don’t Ignore Collection Letters

The last thing you want to find in your mailbox is a collection letter. It is tempting to ignore it. Unfortunately, if you ignore that collection letter for more than 30 days you have lost a golden credit repair opportunity to validate the debt. If you read the collection letter carefully you will see a notice that you have 30 days to challenge the collection. Don’t miss your chance.

Credit Repair and Debt Validation

Collectors are governed by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which says that if challenged they must, upon request, provide proof of their legal right to collect and an accounting of the amount due. This accounting should come from the original creditor. If the collector cannot provide the requested documentation they must cease collection efforts and not report to the credit bureaus.

Change is Natural

Everything changes. No industry stands still. Henry Ford’s Model T was revolutionary, and opened the eyes of the world to new possibilities. But by today’s standards, the Model T, as important as it once was, has its place only in the past. Virtually every aspect of the early model automobile has been improved on, far beyond what Henry Ford could have imagined in his day.

The Changing Credit Repair Industry

The Internet has grown into a vibrant worldwide business community. In this environment competition thrives and new ideas come to life at amazing speed. New participants have entered the credit repair arena and brought fresh life to the business. Some older members have updated their methods; while others, perhaps top heavy with technology, continue to stand their ground even as the earth shifts beneath their feet.

The New Breed Appears

From this dynamic mix has appeared a new breed, the true credit repair professional. This new breed has a true mastery of the craft, and an impressive arsenal of tools capable of delivering results beyond the imagination of the early pioneers in the industry. Everything about the business is changing. And the changes involve you.

Credit and Your Life

There is nothing as important to your financial life as your credit. The content of your credit report, along with your credit scores, will determine the interest rate you pay on everything from your credit cards to your mortgage. The impact of your credit on your life can be staggering, and should not be taken lightly. The word is out.

The Problem of Errors

The three major credit bureaus maintain credit files on over 200 million Americans. A staggering amount of data moves through the credit reporting system. Errors are common and can translate into enormous costs for consumers; and yet, in a terrible percentage of cases these errors go unrecognized. This phenomenon is more damaging than you might think. Identifying errors on your report involves more than just spotting unfamiliar account information. The majority of credit report errors are compliance violations that you will not find without training.

FICO, A Lack of Understanding

Lenders base their underwriting decisions on the content of your credit report along with the numeric value of your FICO scores. These FICO scores have a major affect on your life, and yet few people have any knowledge of how they work. Here again, a lack of understanding results in a huge cost. A well-informed reshaping of your credit may have a dramatic impact on your credit scores. Even simple changes can bring major improvement, yet without proper information this potential remains untapped.

The Credit Repair Professional

The prevalence of credit reporting errors, coupled with a lack of understanding of FICO scores, result in a terrible cost to consumers, often having the greatest impact on those who can afford it the least. The credit repair professional provides an important, and often life changing, service by assisting in the identification and removal of credit reporting errors. In addition, a credit repair professional is a conduit for information about legal rights, rehabilitation opportunities, and credit restoration tools that can be employed to your benefit.

The Results You Need

The goal of a credit repair program is to improve your credit. Along with the skillful identification and removal of reporting errors, the process may include specific recommendations for building new credit, managing existing debt, rehabilitating defaulted obligations, and handling collectors. All of this must take place within the context of optimizing your credit scores. The credit repair professional operates in a fiduciary capacity and will utilize the widest range of tools to insure quick and lasting results.

Personal Service

You are unique, and so is your credit. There is no generic approach to credit repair that will do you justice. No credit repair software has the ability to spot the compliance errors on your credit report, or to determine the proper balance of accounts to optimize your credit scores, or to help you determine the right approach to take with an active collector. There is no one-dimensional credit repair program that will produce the results you deserve. True professional credit repair is about personal service. You cannot afford to settle for less.

What it Means to You

The credit repair professional will make sure that everything possible is done to help you reach your goals. The professional approach to credit repair can mean everything to you. Do you want real results? Do your want to see your scores improve? Do you want your credit to meet or exceed lenders requirements? Wait until you experience what a real professional can do for you!

As a credit repair specialist, I’m frequently asked these questions about cleaning up your credit report. It’s important to know the answers to these questions before you start repairing your credit.

Even if I get a negative item removed from my credit report, it will come back – won’t it?

It’s actually quite uncommon to get an item removed from your credit report only to have it come back. The credit bureaus will sometimes temporarily delete a negative listing if they haven’t heard from the creditor after the 30 day time frame. If the creditor reports it later, the credit bureau will sometimes reinsert the negative listing back on the credit report. This is called a “soft delete.”

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the credit bureaus must follow strict guidelines to notify you if they decide to re-report an entry on your credit report, which they hardly ever do. The new FCRA guidelines have reduced the frequency of the negative items being re-reported on your credit report. The guidelines have also increased the risk of lawsuit for the credit bureaus when they violate them.

Bankruptcies and foreclosures are impossible to remove from my credit report, right?

Wrong. Any type of listing on your credit report can be removed, even public records such as bankruptcies and foreclosures. Nothing is set in stone. Tax liens, judgments and repossessions also get removed from consumers credit reports on a daily basis! All negative information that is incorrect, erroneous or even questionable should be disputed.

Public records and unpaid debts can be more difficult to work with; that much is true, but they can be removed if you know what you’re doing. Having this kind of negative information is crucial to your credit scores and your ability to obtain loans at low interest rates.

Having your credit repaired correctly is imperative and that’s why I highly suggest spending a good deal of time learning about credit repair so that you don’t mess it up. I don’t say this to scare you into signing up with a credit repair service or buying a credit repair e-book…I say this because your financial future depends on it.

I’ve seen too many people try to fix their credit on their own first. After they’ve had little to no success, THEN they contact a credit repair service. But, at that time it’s usually too late – the damage has been done. You basically have one shot to get this right. It’s not something that you should try go skim on.

Hire the best credit repair service or put in your time learning about credit repair. Remember, your financial future depends on it.

John and Susan declared bankruptcy in January of 2004 and were discharged four months later in April. They were under the impression that there was nothing that could be done to repair their credit following the bankruptcy. They both felt as if they were holding their breath and waiting for the years to pass. In January of 2008 they decided to apply for an FHA mortgage.

They were not really surprised when they were turned down. The mortgage broker told them that their credit scores were in the 400s, but that he thought they should explore the possibility of credit repair. John contacted a reputable credit repair company for a consultation and was surprised to hear that there are many things that can be done after a bankruptcy to clean up one’s credit report.

John signed up for the credit repair program and provided their account representative with a copy of the bankruptcy discharge and the schedule of items included. The credit repair professional gave them some advice about rebuilding their credit and provided several links to secured credit card issuers.

He informed them that these new cards, as small as they are, have tremendous power to rebuild their credit scores as long as they are managed properly. He advised them that the FICO credit scoring model, in use by the majority of lenders, recognizes five levels of card usage – specifically 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 percent. He suggested that they open two new cards each and maintain the balances below 20 percent of the credit limit.

The credit repair company went to work on the post-bankruptcy clean up while John and Susan opened their new secured credit cards making sure to keep the balances in the range that the credit repair professional had suggested. About 45 days later they received updated credit reports in the mail from each of the three credit bureaus. They were surprised to see the number of items that had been corrected.

They contacted the credit repair company to review the results and after going over all of the details were thrilled to hear that the post bankruptcy clean up was completed. No longer were there past due amounts showing on the accounts that had been included in the bankruptcy, nor were any accounts listed in a collection status. In fact, their credit report looked so clean that they could hardly recognize it.

The credit repair representative explained to them that unlike other derogatory information that ought to be disputed in a paced manner to avoid being rejected by the credit bureaus, bankruptcy issues should be addressed all at once. So, much to John and Susan’s surprise, they found that that had already successfully completed their credit repair program.

The credit repair representative spent some time coaching them about debt management and the ongoing handling of the new credit cards. John and Susan could hardly believe their ears when the credit repair representative suggested that they consider reapplying for the mortgage in another five months, just enough time for the new secured credit cards to produce a positive impact on their credit scores.

And, so it was that in the first week of July 2008, only six months after contact the credit repair company that John and Susan returned to the mortgage broker and asked to reapply for an FHA mortgage. The mortgage broker was surprised to see them and even suggested that it was a bit soon for their credit scores to have improved much from the 400s that they had been in January. But when he ran the credit he was amazed at what he saw.

John and Susan’s credit scores were in the mid 600s, a full 200 points above where they had been only 6 months prior. The mortgage broker was thrilled to complete the application. The next day the mortgage broker called Susan at work and told her the great news; she and John had been approved for their mortgage and qualified for the lowest available FHA interest rate.

Last week John and Susan moved into their new home. It’s a beautiful three bedroom, two bath ranch on half an acre just outside of Atlanta, Georgia. John has already purchased a new grill and a lawn mower. A couple of days ago Susan surprised John by bringing home a new member of the family, a two year old Golden Retriever from the local pound. Yesterday they got on two phone lines in their new home and called their credit repair representative to thank him for his guidance and to share all of their life changing news.
